Following the work made in previous years, two series of sea surveys were carried out in 1989 over the expected spawning area and season of the Bay of Biscay anchovy stock. The aim of these surveys was to achieve spawning biomass estimates using the "Daily Egg Production Method" or "Batch Fecundity Method" (DEPM, Lasker, 1985).

Anchovy egg surveys in 1989 showed a lower spawning level than in 1987 and in 1988, measured as extension of the spawning positive area and total daily egg production of the population.
