From November 2002 till October 2005 the EU funded project FerryBox from on-line oceanographic observations to environmental information- was carried out with eleven partners from Europe. On 9 ferries FerryBoxes a set of standard sensors in a trough flow system were installed and measurements made on the respective transects covered by the ferrylines. European waters covered were the Baltic Sea on two transects, the Skagerrak area between Oslo and the Danish mainland, the North Sea between Germany and the UK, a tidal inlet of the Wadden Sea, the Irish Sea, the Channel between Southampton and the Isle of Wight, the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay between Portsmouth and Bilbao, and finally the Aegean Sea between Athens and Crete.
