The present studies, were undertaken with a view to acquiring information on the relative abundance and age composition of whiting in that part of the Irish.Sea mainly exploited by boats based on the east coast of Ireland, excluding Northern Ireland. For the ports of Clogherhead, Balbriggan, Skerries, Howth, and to a much lesser extent Dún Laoghaire, whiting form a very large fraction by weight of the total demersal catch.
