Scanty knowledge of S. mentella population structure in the open North East Atlantic causes great difficulties in NEAFC with management measures for its pelagic fishery. According to ICES, in the Irminger Sea there are three types of S. mentella: “oceanic”, “pelagic deep-sea” and “deep-sea” S. mentella. Since the mid 1990’s some researchers have argued that the “pelagic deep-sea” type is a stock distinguished from the “oceanic” type. The purpose of the present paper is to study population structure of S. mentella in the pelagic Irminger Sea based on biological and genetic studies.
