The European eel (Anguilla anguilla (L.)) has been declining in both catches and glass eel recruitment during the past 40-60 years. We are now in urgent need of assessing the potential of different measures to counteract this decline. The aim of this work is to estimate the present day spawner escapement and put it in relation to the maximum possible escapement of the present population and that of a calculated pristine eel population. We also assess the potential of increasing spawner escapement by restrictions of fishery and re-stocking of elvers.
