The QSR ranks the current concerns about the environmental health of Region V, using the listing of impacts and properties presented in the recent Joint Assessment and Monitoring Programme (JAMP). Paying special attention to the sustainable exploitation of living resources, and issues relating to key concerns about eutrophication, and hazardous and radioactive substances (Table I). Throughout the area of Region V the general lack of efforts to monitor the majority of the critical parameters means that almost total reliance has bad to be placed on information derived from scientific investigations, whose main objectives have been to understand and quantify the physical, chemical and biological processes. Hence it remains difficult to distinguish between natural fluctuations and changes that may be induced anthropogenic activity.
