The upwelling index (UI) has been used extensively to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of the upwelling of the NW Iberian Peninsula. The classic UI calculation method, based on the sea level pressure fields, made that this index behave as the classic atmospheric climatic indices like North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Eastern Atlantic Pattern (EA) but working at different scale. In this communication we study the temporal variability of UI in order to understand and formalize its relationship with the main atmospheric and oceanic processes that occurs at regional scale.
