Figueiredo and Thomas (1967) and Farmer (1975) published earlier reviews summarizing information on the Norway lobster (Nephrops norvegicus). Since then, a number of studies have been conducted, expanding and broadening our general knowledge of this species. This article provides an update on the biology of N. norvegicus and the relevant literature, and discusses some controversial features. The main aspects considered are related to the life history of the Norway lobster and emphasis is placed on morphology, reproduction, size-age, moulting, and behaviour. Because of the importance of providing a wide review of the literature, reference is also made to other relevant aspects. Growth models and fisheries are not included.
