Aspects économiques et sociaux de la gestion des bassins conchylicoles: le cas de Marennes-Oléron
Bivalve culture is one of the oldest types of extensive mariculture and also a very important part of the marine economy in France. Analysis of the "lagoon enterprise" shows the importance of the externalities related with the effects of biological interdependency on the individual and global performances. The economic and social cost of the lack of proper stock management is reviewed, as well as the potential benefits and feasibility of the regulation. The importance of market externalities, often ignored when speaking of production regulation, is also pointed out. To build efficient supports for the purpose of decision-making, it is highly desirable to describe in detail the economic and social relations among the producers. Questionnaires and multivariate analysis help us to a better understanding of the social structure of the activity. The interpretation of the results shows whether groups of producers are likely to respond positively or not to stock management incentives. The necessity of reconsidering stock management needs within the framework of a global sector management policy is highlighted.
