The whelping and nursing season of the harbour seal in the waddensea of Schleswig-Holstein was observed during the summer months of 1975 and 1976. 95% of the pups were born between June 16th and July 8th, the peak of the mean daily pup production being shortly before July 1st.

The average individual nursing period lasts for approximately 26 days. In both years, a maximum

of 400 (live ) pups was observed in the study area, which amounted to 24% of the postwhelping population. More than half of the pups of the total waddensea population are born in the waddensea of Schleswig-Holstein .
