The WKLTVSWE-Workshop is a joint effort of ICES and GLOBEC and was endorsed byEUR-OCEANS (http://www.eur-oceans.org). In 1997 the SPACC (Small Pelagic Fishes andClimate Change) initiative of GLOBEC held a joint meeting with SCOR Working Group 98on world-wide large-scale fluctuations of sardine and anchovy populations (Schwartzlose etal. 1999). It was decided then to continue this “global” undertaking with a series of regionalworkshops. Previous meetings focused on the Benguela Current in 2001 (e.g. Cury andShannon 2004), the Humboldt Current in 2002 (e.g. Alheit and Niquen 2004) and the Japanesewaters in 2003. During the annual meeting in 2005 of the former ICES Study Group onRegional Ecology of Small Pelagics (SGRESP), now a permanent ICES Working Group(WGLESP, ICES/GLOBEC Working Group on Life Cycle and Ecology of Small PelagicFish), it was recommended to continue this series of workshops with a meeting focusing onthe waters surrounding the Iberian peninsula including the western Mediterranean Sea. Asynthesis of the hydrography, oceanography and biology of the South Western Europeanwaters is presented in section 3.
