Relationships between mariculture and natural populations in the seas of the USSR

Extensive mariculture in the seas of the USSR takes different forms and includes rearing of various species of aquatic organisms. Its traditional forms are salmon and sturgeon enhancement, the success of which has resulted in increased sturgeon stocks in the Caspian, Black, and Azov seas, and of salmon stocks in the Okhotsk and Japan seas. Recently, new forms of extensive mariculture developed in the Soviet Union have included the creation of artificial spawing grounds, reefs, macro-algae plantations, and mussel installations .
