Report of the Science Committee (SCICOM), September 2021

The Science Committee (SCICOM) met remotely and received updates on ongoing activities under the Steering Groups, Operational Groups and Strategic Initiatives, and discussed strategic developments relevant to the Committee. Strategic issues included updates on activities within the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the joint ICES/PICES Ocean Decade Steering Committee, cooperation with PICES, activities in the Arctic and updates on increasing the engagement with physical and chemical oceanographers. The Subgroup on Ecosystem Based Management (EBM) presented a framework on EBM, which SCICOM welcomed. The Bureau-Council Subgroup on COVID-19 presented seven recommendations to be presented to Council for approval. SCICOM discussed further and decided on objectives and measures on engagement with national activities and national priorities, and strengthening international. The Steering Groups (SG) gave an overview of their work, reporting on challenges of expert groups continuing to work remotely.
