Report of the Study Group on Age Units for Herring
During the 1991 meeting of the ICES Herring Assessment Working Group for the Area South of 62°N, a proposal was put forward to express the age of herring in years instead of rings; ·a practice that is common in other fish species. This suggestion was further discussed at the ICES Statutory Meeting in 1991, and the following resolution (No. 2:20) was passed:
A Study Group on Age Units for Herring will be established under the chairmanship of Mr. A. Carten (Netherlands) and will work in 1992 by correspondence to:
a) consider the desirability and feasibility of changing the age units used for herring from rings to years;
b) prepare a report including recommendations for the 1992 meetings of the Atlanto-Scandian Herring and Capelin Working Group.
