During its meeting in 1982, the ICES/SCOR Working Group on the Study of the Pollution of the Baltic Sea (SCOR WG 42) agreed that "Pilot Sediment Studies" should be initiated in its study area. A basic programme proposed by an §.Q hQ~. Sediment Group, convened by Dr L. Niemisto, was accepted. This programme was set up in order to investigate several closely related tasks, including a) problems of contamination history, reflected by contaminant profiles in segmented sediment cores,
b) material fluxes across the water-sediment interface, and
c) geochemical processes in the early stages of diagenesis.
