Throughout the meeting, plenary sessions, workshops, and individuals themselves, discussions returned to the meaning of “stock enhancement” . Within the context of the Symposium it was recognized implicitly that animals were added to the stock as the means of enhancement. Nevertheless, it was also recognized that many other established management techniques aim to enhance stocks (i.e. to increase the spawning-stock biomass and yield), e.g. minimum landing size, mesh regulations, closed areas and seasons, effort limitation. If these measures are not to be confused with the application of mariculture techniques to the management of offshore stocks, more appropriate terminology will have to be defined and adopted.
