ICES approach to considering a management plan/strategy precautionary is based on the probability of the spawning-stock biomass (SSB) for the stocks concerned being below the precautionary reference point Blim.

ICES has adopted one criterion for all medium-/long-lived stocks, and a second similar criterion for short-lived species. All plans evaluated in 2013 and onwards follow these criteria.
