On a low scale the disease is seen locally nearly every year. The reasons why the disease reaches epidemic proportions in certain years are not yet fully understood. The extensive epidemic in the yearlings in 1974 and the some- what less widespread one in 1980 struck both large year classes. In 1974, the water temperatures in the northern part of the outbreak region were slightly higher than average. In 1980, the whole affected region showed higher temperatures, specially in August.
