The purpose of this paper is to discuss in the light of the material at our disposal some old and still very interesting problems of the fishing and whaling industries in the North Atlantic. These problems are mainly connected with the distribution and habits of the species of fish and whales of economic importance, which are found along the slope of the Continental Shelf — a "facies” of the sea bottom affording very special and characteristic conditions for supporting a large community of living creatures.

A contribution to the work of the Whaling Committee and of the North Eastern Area Committee.
